Instacart is a popular grocery delivery service that allows customers to order groceries online and have them delivered to their doorstep. But what exactly is the nature of the work for those who deliver these groceries? Is it considered contract work or freelance work? Let’s dive into the details and explore the differences between the two.
When it comes to Instacart, the work is typically classified as contract work. This means that individuals who deliver groceries for Instacart are considered independent contractors rather than employees. As independent contractors, they have more flexibility in terms of when and how they work, but they are also responsible for their own expenses, such as gas and vehicle maintenance.
As independent contractors, Instacart shoppers have the freedom to choose their own hours and work as much or as little as they want. They can log into the Instacart app whenever they are available to accept delivery requests and earn money. This flexibility is one of the main attractions for individuals who are looking for a side gig or a way to earn extra income.
However, it’s important to note that being classified as an independent contractor also means that Instacart shoppers are not entitled to certain benefits and protections that employees typically receive. For example, they are not eligible for health insurance, paid time off, or workers’ compensation. This is something that potential Instacart shoppers should consider before deciding to pursue this type of work.
Understanding the Nature of Instacart Work
Instacart is a popular on-demand grocery delivery service that connects customers with personal shoppers who fulfill their orders. The nature of Instacart work is unique and offers flexibility to both shoppers and customers.
When it comes to Instacart, there are two main roles: the customer and the shopper. Customers place their grocery orders through the Instacart app or website, specifying their preferred items and delivery time. Shoppers, on the other hand, are independent contractors who receive these orders and shop for the requested items at local grocery stores.
As a shopper, you have the freedom to choose when and where you want to work. You can set your own schedule and decide how many hours you want to dedicate to shopping for Instacart. This flexibility is one of the main advantages of working for Instacart, as it allows you to balance your work with other commitments or personal responsibilities.
Once you accept an order, you will receive all the necessary information, including the customer’s shopping list and the store where you need to shop. You will then proceed to the store, navigate through the aisles, and pick the items according to the customer’s preferences. It is important to pay attention to detail and ensure that you select the correct items, as customer satisfaction is crucial for the success of the Instacart platform.
After you have completed the shopping, you will proceed to the checkout and pay for the groceries using a prepaid Instacart card. You will then pack the items and deliver them to the customer’s specified address. It is important to handle the groceries with care and ensure that they are delivered in a timely manner.
As a shopper, you are responsible for providing excellent customer service. This includes communicating with the customer if there are any issues or substitutions needed for their order. Instacart also encourages shoppers to go above and beyond by offering suggestions or recommendations to customers, such as suggesting alternative products or notifying them of any ongoing promotions.
Overall, the nature of Instacart work is dynamic and fast-paced. It requires attention to detail, excellent time management skills, and the ability to provide exceptional customer service. If you enjoy shopping and interacting with people, working for Instacart can be a rewarding and flexible opportunity.
Instacart as a Gig Economy Platform
Instacart is a prime example of a gig economy platform, where individuals can work as independent contractors or freelancers to earn money. In the gig economy, workers have the flexibility to choose when and where they work, making it an attractive option for those seeking a side hustle or additional income.
As an Instacart shopper, you have the opportunity to accept or decline orders based on your availability and preferences. This level of autonomy allows you to create a schedule that fits your lifestyle, whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, a student, or someone looking for a flexible work arrangement.
Instacart connects customers with personal shoppers who fulfill their grocery orders. As a shopper, you receive the customer’s order details through the Instacart app and are responsible for selecting the items, navigating the store, and delivering the groceries to the customer’s doorstep. This process is facilitated through the gig economy platform, which provides the infrastructure and technology necessary for seamless order management and communication.
One of the key benefits of Instacart as a gig economy platform is the potential for earning a competitive income. Shoppers have the opportunity to earn money through a combination of base pay, tips, and bonuses. The more orders you complete, the more you can potentially earn. Additionally, Instacart offers incentives and promotions to encourage shoppers to accept certain orders or work during peak times, further increasing earning potential.
However, it’s important to note that working as an independent contractor or freelancer on Instacart also comes with its challenges. As a gig worker, you are responsible for your own expenses, such as gas and vehicle maintenance. You also do not receive benefits typically associated with traditional employment, such as health insurance or paid time off. It’s crucial to carefully consider these factors and assess whether the gig economy model aligns with your financial goals and needs.
The Role of Independent Contractors
Instacart relies on independent contractors to fulfill its delivery services. Independent contractors are individuals who work for themselves and are not considered employees of Instacart. They have the freedom to choose when and where they work, allowing for flexibility in their schedules.
As independent contractors, Instacart shoppers have the responsibility of managing their own business. They are in charge of their own expenses, such as gas and vehicle maintenance, and are not entitled to benefits typically provided to employees, such as health insurance or paid time off.
Instacart provides a platform for independent contractors to connect with customers who need groceries delivered. Shoppers can accept or decline orders based on their availability and preferences. They have the freedom to choose the hours they work and can even work for multiple gig economy platforms simultaneously.
Instacart shoppers are responsible for picking up items from the designated stores and delivering them to the customers’ specified locations. They must ensure the accuracy of the order and provide excellent customer service throughout the delivery process.
While independent contractors have the freedom to work on their own terms, they are still expected to adhere to Instacart’s guidelines and policies. This includes maintaining a high level of professionalism, following safety protocols, and resolving any issues that may arise during the delivery.
Overall, the role of independent contractors is crucial to the success of Instacart. They provide the necessary manpower to fulfill customer orders and contribute to the growth of the gig economy.
Freelancing Opportunities with Instacart
Instacart, the popular grocery delivery platform, offers numerous freelancing opportunities for individuals looking to earn extra income or work on a flexible schedule. As an independent contractor for Instacart, you have the freedom to choose when and where you want to work, making it an ideal option for those seeking a side gig or part-time job.
One of the main advantages of freelancing with Instacart is the ability to set your own hours. Whether you prefer to work early mornings, late nights, or weekends, you can customize your schedule to fit your lifestyle. This flexibility allows you to balance your Instacart gig with other commitments, such as a full-time job or family responsibilities.
Another benefit of freelancing with Instacart is the opportunity to explore different areas and meet new people. As a shopper or driver for the platform, you’ll have the chance to visit various neighborhoods and interact with customers from diverse backgrounds. This can be a great way to expand your social network and gain insights into different communities.
Additionally, freelancing with Instacart can be financially rewarding. The platform offers competitive pay rates, and you have the potential to earn more based on factors such as order size, distance traveled, and customer tips. With the ability to work as much or as little as you want, you have the opportunity to increase your earnings by taking on more orders during peak times or busy seasons.
However, it’s important to note that freelancing with Instacart also comes with its challenges. As an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own expenses, such as gas, car maintenance, and insurance. You’ll also need to manage your taxes and keep track of your earnings for reporting purposes.

Have you read the shopper contract? It’s not just one agreement ….there are four with three links within the agreement that must be following. I have been with Instacart since Aug 2019 with just shy of 5000 orders. Have another 7 thousand with the rest. I’ve seen the change and control and within these contracts are terms that are more employee employer based than independent contractor. Just cause you sign something saying you are an independent contractor doesn’t mean you are one. Only the few that have been around for that amount of time everyday know what I’m talking abojt and they keep us to busy to do anything about it. If you want the real take on things let me know.
